Castle in Szczytno

Back then, the castle served as the focal point of the city, now its ruins have taken the starring role. Originally built of wood, it burned down during the Lithuanian invasion and was rebuilt of bricks and stone. At present, it’s a seat of many offices and a division of the Warmia-Masuria Museum where numerous exhibitions referring to folk art as well as history of the castle and the region itself are presented. The Brotherhood of the Sword and the Crossbow works in the castle too.

It used to be the seat of the Teutonic prosecutor. In 1656, during the Polish-Swedish war, the fortress fulfilled its defensive role for the last time. From the mid-17th century the castle began to decline and finally was abandoned. The city authorities only made matters worse, giving the castle bricks to the local inhabitants for the purpose of flat building. Therefore, the tower and one of the castle wings were demolished. Currently, offices are housed in the renovated building.
